Headwind distraction… and diversification

As I did my usual route home into the Peak District on my bike, suffering into the usual headwind, I was distracting myself with thoughts of growth and diversification (it was a strong headwind).

Since my early days at A4e, under the brilliant direction of Mark Lovell, we had a focus on diversification. It’s something that has stayed with me. We’re now supporting clients diversify in the UK, qualifying new markets/opportunities, and developing market entry strategies and bid win strategies. It is one of the most rewarding parts of business development, helping a client to secure a contract that builds on their transferable skills.

But we’re also diversifying 50 Degrees. Originally focused on bid writing in the UK, we’re now operating internationally, with a broader offer that includes:

  • Advisory: with a fast growing strategy development offer, supporting both local government and providers

  • Solution: helping organisations develop compelling operating models for new, complex services, including commercial and financial analytical support

  • Bid: ‘full stack’ bid offer, from strategy to bid management and proposal writing

Much like fighting against the relentless headwind, the balance of diversification vs focus is difficult. It will only be achieved through our people. We’re building our talent pool and have been blown away by our recent recruits (shout out to Charlotte, Kesiah, Jemma and Dan).

‘What’s next?’ That seems to define our approach.

What’s next for me is a nice tailwind back home to Sheffield.
