Happiness at 50 Degrees: 8.9 out of 10

One of my favourite jobs as Head of People & Wellbeing at 50 Degrees is conducting my regular wellbeing reviews with the team. It’s a great opportunity to check in with everyone and see first-hand how the investments we have made around health and wellbeing are impacting our people and their happiness at work.

I’m very proud to work for an organisation that cares so deeply about the wellbeing of their team. We have spent a lot of time, energy (and money) setting up 50 Degrees to make it a warm, supportive and collegiate environment, that recognises the myriad of needs people have both inside and outside of work.

A lot of the more experienced (ok, old) folks here are corporate survivors, having worked directly or indirectly in less than positive work environments. Places where corporate politics, no work-life balance, and dog-eat-dog was the norm. And we are 100% committed to making 50 Degrees as far away from that as we can.

One of our most popular wellbeing initiatives is our individual wellbeing budget, where everyone gets £1,000 a year to spend on things to improve their health and wellbeing. In my 1-2-1 wellbeing reviews we discuss what people have been spending this on and its impact. Wellbeing is clearly a very individual thing, as evidenced by some recent examples of how people have been investing their budget!

  • Getting their nails done, or having a haircut

  • Gym membership and clothes

  • Massages

  • Yoga classes

  • Buying a drysuit for scuba diving

  • Hiking gear

  • A night out with their partner

  • A mountain biking trip

Happiness at work is a key metric for us at 50 Degrees.  And I was really pleased to see our latest average happiness score across the team is 8.9/10. And just to clarify, in this era of ‘fake news’, the image of a 9 that accompanies this Blog is due solely to our image bank, somewhat unsurprisingly, being able to provide a direct hit for for 8.9. Forgive me for rounding up.

Decimal points aside, there’s still room for improvement but it’s great to see our investments in health and wellbeing having a positive impact.
